Description:

The electromagnet AGEM 5520 can generate strong magnetic fields for experimental applications. Depending on the required magnetic flux density and Equipment under Test volume the air gap can be adjusted continuously. The magnet poles come with conical shape close to the test volume to improve accessability and to optimize the achievable magnetic flux density. The locking of the magnet poles is made using hand levers. Their position relative to their thread can be changed if needed. For the simplification of the air gap spacing adjustment there are plastic spacers supplied, which provide easy and repeatable setting of 6 different spacings from 15 mm to 40 mm in 5 mm steps.

Safety Precautions:

The magnet shall only be operated by skilled persons. The strong magnetic fields may harm persons with pacemakers or sensitive electronic equipment (e.g. magnetic storage devices like hard discs). Attach suitable warning labels and prevent unauthorized use of the equipment.

Both clamping hand levers must be locked before operating the magnet. There are high forces acting on the magnet poles while current is flowing through the coils. These forces may cause unlocked poles to impact suddenly with danger for health and materials.

The cable connections of the magnet shall be made according the relevant safety regulations because voltages in the order of 250 V may cause severe danger to health.

Never disconnect the cabling of the magnet while current is applied! This can generate very high induction voltages, which can be highly dangerous to both, operators and connected equipment.

Operation:

The electromagnet AGEM 5520 is usually operated in the non-linear range of permittivity when high fieldstrengths are required. This leads to a more flat characteristic of the magnetic flux density with increasing drive current, the iron of the poles become saturated. In general the achievable magnetic flux density between the poles becomes larger with decreasing air gap spacing. The sharp bend of saturation is more pronounced the shorter the air gap is. Enlarging the air gap leads to a "linearisation" of the magnetizing curve, but the acievable flux density reduces. The performance of the magnet is mainly limited by the losses of the copper windings. These losses are proportional to the square of drive current flowing through the coil. A water cooling of the coils was not provided because of economic reasons. Because of the very large thermal capacity of the magnet it can be operated with 5 kW power for 2 minutes, which rises the temperature from 20°C to 60°C. Afterwards a cooling time of approx.

30 min to 1 hour is needed to bring the coils close to room temperature. The cooling time can be reduced significantly when using fans to get rid of the heat.

The poles should always be covered slightly with grease to avoid corrossion by surface rust. The magnet coils are usually connected in series, which provides the same current flowing through each coil. The cabling for series connection is made as follows: the short interconnection cable is connected to the red terminal of the right coil an to the black terminal of the left coil. The positive terminal of the power supply is connected to the red terminal of the left coil, the black terminal of the right coil is connected to the negative terminal of the power supply. In special cases however it makes sense to operate the coils in parallel connection, e.g. using a dual power supply with master-slave capability.

When operated with small air gaps and high currents, enormous forces are impacting at the magnet poles. These forces might lead to a noticeable, elastic deformation of the base stand, which will result in a reduction of the air gap. To avoid this effect, three different distance blocks made of plastic are supplied with the magnet, which are inserted on top of the magnet coils. Each distance block is useable for two air gap dimensions as labelled on each block: 15/20 mm, 25/35 mm, 30/40 mm
